Frequently asked questions about CBAM representation

Answers to our clients' most frequent questions. Can't find your question? Get in touch with us directly.

Why do I need an indirect customs representative for CBAM?
Only EU-established companies can register as CBAM declarants and buy CBAM certificates directly. Companies without an EU establishment need an indirect customs representative with an EU EORI number to fulfil CBAM obligations on their behalf.
What is the CBAM declaration and when is it due?
The CBAM declaration is the annual mandatory report to the EU CBAM registry. It must be filed by 31 May for the previous year. The first full declaration for 2026 is due by 31 May 2027.
Which goods are subject to CBAM?
CBAM currently covers iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity. The European Commission is considering expansion to further sectors from 2030.
How are CBAM costs calculated?
CBAM costs are based on embedded emissions of imported goods multiplied by the current EU ETS price. ArtemLEX calculates this automatically and offers a CO₂ price simulator for forecasting.
How does CBAM representation differ from CBAM software?
CBAM software (ArtemLEX Basic/Enterprise) supports EU-established companies with self-managed CBAM compliance. CBAM representation is for companies without an EU establishment where Artem handles full CBAM processing as indirect customs representative.
