Frequently asked questions about PPWR

What is the PPWR and who does it affect?
The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) is the new EU Packaging Regulation that replaces the previous Directive 94/62/EC. It affects all companies that place packaged products on the EU market – regardless of company size or country of origin.
What are the most important PPWR requirements?
Among other things, the PPWR requires: all packaging must be recyclable by 2030, minimum recycled content is mandated depending on the material, single-use plastic packaging is restricted, and labelling obligations regarding recyclability and material composition apply from 2028.
When does the PPWR apply?
The PPWR has been in force since 2024 and is being applied gradually. Most requirements apply from 2028 (labelling) or 2030 (full recyclability). Companies should start taking stock now to be compliant in time.
What does 'recyclable' mean under the PPWR?
Packaging is considered recyclable under the PPWR if it can be collected, sorted and recycled at scale. The European Commission sets specific criteria for each packaging category. ArtemLEX automatically checks your packaging against these criteria.
What are the labelling obligations under the PPWR?
From 2028, packaging must be labelled uniformly across the EU: a QR code with product information, a recyclability symbol, the recycled-content figure and sorting instructions for consumers. ArtemLEX generates all required labels automatically.
